US Aircraft Carrier Targeted With "Missiles and Drones" Twice In 24 Hours, Houthis Claim

On May 31, 2024, Yemeni army spokesman and Houthi leader Yahya Saree delivered a speech claiming that the U.S.S. Dwight D. Eisenhower, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, was targeted twice in under 24 hours by Yemeni and Houthi military forces, along with other ships stationed in the area. He claims that the operation used a number of missiles and drones to attack the carrier group. The Eisenhower carrier group is currently stationed in the Red Sea. The group has been on patrol in the area since November 4, 2023, and has faced relentless bombardment from the Houthis.

Who exactly are the Houthis, and why are they attacking U.S. vessels? The Houthis currently stand as Yemen's governing body. According to the U.S. Department of State, they are a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist Group.” This designation was set specifically due to the Houthis' relentless attacks since November. The attacks are the result of the tensions between Israel and Iran, as the Houthis see religious motivation to support groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Iranian government. Tensions in the Middle East continue to rise.
