Los Angeles Hit With 4.4 Magnitude Earthquake - Scary Reminder Of Deadly Potential

Writer: MF TylerMF Tyler

On August 12, 2024, Los Angeles was struck by a 4.4-magnitude earthquake originating from the Puente Hills thrust fault system, according to seismologist Lucy Jones. The Puente Hills fault has the potential to produce a 7.5-magnitude earthquake at some point in the future, making it more deadly than the notorious San Andreas fault.

The loss of life and economic toll that this would produce has the potential to be one of the costliest natural disasters in American history, and today’s earthquake is a scary reminder of that unpleasant truth. “It’s a reminder that this is actually our most dangerous fault,” Jones said in a statement.

Today’s earthquake struck at exactly 1:20 PM, just two miles away from Highland Park, according to the city’s earthquake tracking database. This data can be viewed here. It’s important for anyone living in the area to understand the risk that these earthquakes can pose and to be appropriately prepared.
