After years of warning signs, Haiti has pretty much fallen. A vicious gang leader by the name of Jimmy “Barbeque” Chérizier has united multiple violent organizations to create a criminal and political enterprise that has assumed control over most parts of the country. The United States has evacuated all non-essential personnel from the embassy, and is urging its citizens to avoid any travel to Haiti. The main airport is no longer opperational. Here's a look inside the situation:
The leader of this rebellion, Jimmy “Barbeque” Chérizier, is an ex-police officer. He claims his nickname comes from his mother’s famous grilled chicken. A paper by the Harvard Human Rights Law Center would seem to disagree with that. The paper claims that Jimmy Chérizier helped plan and provide resources for the infamous La Saline massacre, in which at least 71 civilians (including children) were systematically extracted from their homes and executed at gunpoint and with machetes. Their bodies were then burned and dismembered, hence the nickname “Barbeque”. Whether you believe Jimmy’s story about his mother’s chicken, or the Harvard Human Rights Law Center, is up to you. This is truly a tragic time for the people of Haiti.
