On Monday, July 8, 2024, tropical storm Beryl was upgraded to a category 1 hurricane just before making landfall in Texas in the early hours of the morning. The hurricane brought 10-15 inches of rain and 80 mph wind. The southeastern coast has experienced “life-threatening” storm surges as well as flash flood warnings. There has been significant damage to infrastructure in the area, and at least nine people are currently believed to be dead. The situation has been declared a federal disaster according to Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick.
While the brunt of the storm may have passed, residents’ woes are far from over. Over one million customers of CenterPoint Energy living in the Houston area are currently without power. Many lives are currently at risk with the heat wave currently plaguing the region, as repairs are expected to take several days. An outage map can be found here. It is important to check on loved ones to make sure they are faring well during these conditions. Cooling centers and shelter locations can be found here.
